Columbia, Maryland (August 9, 2005) — PEAK Technologies, an RR Donnelley company (NYSE: RRD), today announced the launch of the PEAK Automation Controller software, an internally developed RFID device controller solution for SAP users. The PEAK Automation Controller software was built by PEAK in SAP’s native programming language and is delivered on the SAP NetWeaver™ platform, therefore further leveraging the existing infrastructure and skill sets of SAP customers.
The PEAK Automation Controller software allows SAP users to seamlessly deploy RFID printers and readers into their existing infrastructure in order for users to maintain an SAP-centric application environment. The software benefits SAP users by meeting the RFID tagging and reading requirements of the major retailers and the Department of Defense (DoD). The software also provides a long-term solution for SAP customers that can scale up to enterprise levels as RFID volumes grow eliminating the need to start with one solution only to change it out later. The software handles all RFID tag printing and label format maintenance and is configurable to collect RFID reads from mobile, portal, or tunnel RFID readers deployed throughout the enterprise. The PEAK Automation Controller is also able to filter the aggregate reads from the RFID reader network in order to determine how many of those which were read should be passed on to SAP. Pacific Cycle, the Madison, Wisconsin-based manufacturer of such name brand bicycles as Schwinn, GT, Roadmaster and Mongoose utilized the PEAK Automation Controller software as an integral part of its March 31, 2005, go-live to seamlessly integrate multiple RFID hardware devices into SAP® Auto-ID Infrastructure. “We decided to deploy an integrated infrastructure that was significantly more useful than the basic slap and ship system that met Wal-Mart’s core requirements,” said Ed Matthews, Director of Information Systems, Pacific Cycle. “Our goal was to tie all of the RFID data back to the SAP R/3 software so we could use the information to improve our shipping and receiving operations in relation to our retail customers. The PEAK Automation Controller was a critical component to the success of our rollout as it allowed us to leverage our existing SAP infrastructure while seamlessly connecting RFID printers and readers to our application environment. The PEAK Automation Controller is also scalable and has the flexibility to adapt to the constant changes in RFID technology.” “Through its strategic approach to the project, Pacific Cycle has demonstrated that RFID technology can drive real business benefits when properly deployed into an integrated infrastructure such as SAP,” said Adrian Thomas, President & CEO, PEAK Technologies, Inc. “By utilizing the powerful combination of the SAP Auto ID Infrastructure and the PEAK Automation Controller, Pacific Cycle was able to create a RFID system that would scale allowing flexibility to expand their internal uses of RFID, add other retail customers, and be well positioned to move RFID to the point of manufacture in Asia.” About PEAK Technologies PEAK Technologies, an RR Donnelley company, is an international provider of automatic identification and data collection (AIDC) systems, enterprise mobility solutions and ongoing service and support.
