In today’s global marketplace, most retailers and wholesalers require a unique identifier be assigned for every product.
Unlike a supplier’s proprietary part number, the required identifier needs to be globally unique and adhere to a world wide standard. In the United States , this product identifier is the UPC number.
A UPC number consists of two components: a Company Prefix and a Product Number. The Company Prefix is assigned by a not-for-profit organization, GS1 US (formerly the Uniform Code Council.)
Aside from managing the database of company prefixes, the GS1 is responsible for the establishment and implementation of global commerce standards for markings and communication.
UPC Code Registration Steps
Step One: Apply for a GS1 Company Prefix
Apply for a company prefix. Create an account at GS1 US and purchase a company prefix to uniquely identify your business.
Step Two: Assign a Unique Product Number
Assign a unique product number for each item and variation. Combined with your prefix, this forms the full 12-digit UPC.
Step Three: Plan Barcode Placement
Determine how your product will display the barcode and follow GS1 size and contrast guidelines for easy scanning.
Step Four: Generate and Order Barcodes
Order your barcodes. Use GS1 tools or a certified vendor to create high-resolution barcode images or order pre-printed labels.
Step Five: Test for Readability
Print a sample and scan it to confirm the barcode meets retailer and scanner requirements.
Step Six: Maintain Records
Track all UPCs internally and update your GS1 account as you add or retire products.
